MIME Type Lookup

Look up the MIME type for a file extension.

Results appear here.

What the result means

The lookup takes the last extension in the name you type. photo.PNG and a bare .png both become png once a leading dot is removed and the letters are made lower case. A name such as archive.tar.gz uses gz, because that is the final segment, not tar. The table is a fixed list kept on the page. It covers common page, style, script, image, font, audio, video, and archive extensions, and it is not the full registry of types. The file itself is never opened, so the bytes are not inspected. An extension the table does not contain is reported as unknown. That word is not a guess that the file is safe or unsafe, and it is not a default type filled in for you.

Questions

What is a MIME type?

A MIME type is a label such as text/html or image/png that tells software how to treat a file. This page maps an extension to a common type. It does not inspect the bytes.

What if the extension is missing?

If there is no extension, the result is unknown. A name with several dots uses the last one. A leading dot, as in .png, is removed first.

Do you assume application/octet-stream?

No. An extension that is not in the table is unknown. That is not an assumption of application/octet-stream, and it is not a guess about the file.
