Hash Generator
Hash text with SHA-256 in the browser. The input is not uploaded.

What the result means
SHA-256 reduces UTF-8 text to a 256-bit digest, printed here as 64 lowercase hexadecimal characters. The same input always produces the same output, so the digest is a checksum: change one letter or one space and the whole value changes. An empty field is valid. Its digest is e3b0c44298fc1c149afbf4c8996fb92427ae41e4649b934ca495991b7852b855, which you can compare against a blank run. This is not a password hash. There is no salt and the function is fast, so it is the wrong tool for storing a secret people choose. It also hashes the characters you pasted, not a file on disk. The browser calculates it locally and the text is not uploaded.

Questions
Is SHA-256 a password hash?
No. SHA-256 alone is not a password hash: it is fast, unsalted, and identical for the same text. This page hashes text, not a file. Use a dedicated password hash if you are storing a secret people choose.
Can I hash a file?
No. This hashes text, not a file, and there is no file picker. Whatever you paste is turned into UTF-8 and hashed, and a blank field is the empty string. SHA-256 alone is not a password hash.
Why is the digest the same every time?
SHA-256 is a pure function of the bytes. The same text, including the same spaces and the same Unicode, always prints the same 64 lowercase hex characters. Change one character and the digest changes completely. Nothing here is random and nothing is salted.
